Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience: those are the four items that describe the mission of the Tewksbury United Methodist Church (TUMC).
TUMC is a traditional church, founded in 1911 and housed in a 1970-stylized blonde brick building. It has a growing multi-generational congregation, who believe that they can Experience encounters with Christ in their everyday lives, while learning about God’s love and grace through Scripture, living out the lessons from the past Traditions, and Reasoning by illuminating the Holy Spirit in today’s world.
If you were to attend their worship service, you would find about 30-50 people in the service, dressed both casually and more formally. The hour-long worship service itself is a blend of traditional and contemporary liturgical styles. There are prayers, music, a sermon, and sharing time.
“There are many reasons that I participate in the ministries of the Tewksbury United Methodist Church,” said Ellen Lewis, a Lay Leader at the church. “It is a ‘family’ church where I have grown in my faith, the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, and it allows me opportunities to serve and give back to my community. Every Sunday I am able to hear the voice of God through the music, prayers and sermons and what has touched me the most is that I have learned about God's grace and forgiveness.”
This is the only United Methodist Church in Tewksbury, so they take seriously the task of living out of the mission of the United Methodist Church by ‘making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.’ Their Facebook page explains: “As we worship, we live and believe that we can bring our hopes and doubts, joys and concerns together in our faith community as we discern what it means to love God and neighbor.”
United Methodists share a common heritage with all Christians, including the belief that God, who is one, is revealed in three distinct persons. They also believe in the mystery of salvation through Jesus Christ -- that God became human in Jesus of Nazareth; and his life, death and resurrection demonstrates God's redeeming love. And they believe the Holy Spirit is God's present activity in our midst. (You can read more about their beliefs here: http://www.umc.org/what-we-believe/our-christian-roots)
“We are open to all regardless of where you are on your faith journey,” said Pastor Amanda Corella. “We're friendly and caring, and we strive to follow the examples set forth by Jesus.” Pastor Amanda is new to the church, serving as a UMC Student Pastor. She will graduate with her Masters of Divinity from Boston University School of Theology in May of 2019.
“Our church has been set up as a "teaching" church,” explained Lewis. “The concept of the teaching church allows the church and the pastors to grow together and learn from each other. What a blessing for both the church and the pastoral student!”
Sunday school for the children runs concurrent with the worship service. Children are present in worship for part of the service and then dismissed for Sunday School. There are coffee hours every week, bible study classes twice a week, and occasional fellowship brunches. On the first Sunday of the month, communion is served.
Members, which number about 140, can join the choir, women’s group, book studies, and missions committees. TUMC is involved in the community through the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Local AA group, TOPS Group and Tewksbury Food Pantry.
“Through Bible study we learn about our faith stories from the past, and through mission work we find where Christ is present,” said Mary Ann DeFeo. “We identify the primary tasks of our congregation as reaching out and receiving, encouraging faith development, serving others, and caring for God's creation.”
