Tewksbury Congregational Church is hosting a “Blue Christmas” meditation service on Thursday, December 21st at 7:00pm. “Blue Christmas,” also known as “The Longest Night Service” because December 21 is the longest night of the year, is a time for those for whom Christmas may not be very merry.
Amidst the twinkling lights, festive carols, and family gatherings, Christmas can be a time of deep grief and loss. For many it may be the first Christmas without a beloved spouse, child or friend. For others it might be the first Christmas after a divorce, being diagnosed with cancer, living with chronic pain or any sudden unexpected loss. All are welcome to bring their griefs and losses to this special meditative service.
“This is a service where people can grieve, cry, or sit in silence as they find comfort hearing familiar carols, serenity in listening to scripture read that speaks to their need, and being surrounded by fellow sufferers,” said Rev. Norman Bendroth, the interim pastor at the church.“
“At Christmas we remember that we are not alone, but have been visited by Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, God with us.”
There will be contemplative music, readings, a meditation and an opportunity to light a candle to remember a loved one or whatever loss a participant may be experiencing. There will also be a special performance by TCC’s Handbell Choir.
Bendroth will be joined by other clergy from Tewksbury area churches.
