Freddy Gabin rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 6 North Andover to a 40-20 win over No. 14 Tewksbury High, Friday night at Walsh Field.
Gabin and Darrin Watson (12 carries, 94 yards) more than made up for the loss of injured tailback J.D. Allen.
Tewksbury (3-1) jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Kyle Zervas on its opening possession. But the game turned for good in stunning fashion in the opening minute of the second quarter.
North Andover (4-0) tied the game on a 2-yard TD run by Watson. On Tewksbury's next play from scrimmage, linebacker Mark Federico disrupted an attempted pitch to Shane Aylward on a reverse. The ball bounced free, Federico scooped it up and raced in for the go-ahead touchdown.
Things got worse for the Redmen before halftime, as a bad snap on a punt attempt resulted in a safety and a touchdown pass from Jake McElroy to Gabe DeSouza put the Scarlet Knights on top, 23-7 at the break.
Tewksbury narrowed the gap to 23-13 with a 1-yard touchdown run by Jay Connolly on its opening possession of the second half. But a DeSouza field goal and a 39-yard yard scoring scamper by Gabin gave North Andover a 33-13 cushion.
The Redmen had one last gasp, with Aylward scoring on a brilliant 46-yard run, making it 33-20. But that was as close as the Redmen could get.
