A ban on single use plastic bags generated plenty of discussion at the Tewksbury Special Town Meeting Tuesday night.

More than 200 residents turned out at Tewksbury High School Tuesday night for the town's fall Special Town Meeting.
Voters decided on 28 articles, including spending items, zoning issues and town bylaws.
Highlights included:
  • Voters approved bans on the retail sale, cultivation and research of recreational marijuana.
  • Voters approved a ban on single use plastic bags.
  • Voters defeated an article to rezone a parcel of land on Clark Road to Heavy Industrial 1 from residential.
  • Voters approved a final article needed to fund the new $15 million Center Fire Station.
  • Voters defeated a bylaw change that would have allowed billboards in specific places in Tewksbury along Route 495 and I-93.
  • Voters approved funding for renovations and construction of a fitness court at the Saunders Recreation Complex.
We will be publishing a more detailed report on the meeting this week.
