Any concerns that Taylor Ward may have had that winning her first major pageant title wouldn't live up to her expectations disappeared when she woke up on Sept. 10, the morning after she was crowned 2019 Miss Massachusetts Collegiate.
"Sooo this morning I woke up and realized this WAS NOT a dream!!!!" she posted on her Facebook page. "Something I have always dreamed of being able to achieve, I finally did. Feeling the crown on my head and the sash saying Massachusetts gives me goose bumps thinking about it."
The Tewksbury High graduate and The Nichols College junior topped the field of contestants competing in the collegiate division of the Miss Massachusetts Junior High-High School-Collegiate America Pageant in Burlington. The pageant included sportswear, evening gown and interview competitions.
Ward's parents, Ellen (a former Miss Teen New York) and Michael Ward, were in the audience to share her achievement. Making the moment extra special was having the crown placed on her head by her close friend and Miss Massachusetts Collegiate 2018 Sectra Okundaye.
"That was so great," said Ward, who was 2nd runner up in the 2018 pageant. "I had seen her be crowned last year and we talked about how cool it would be if she won and then I won the next year."
Ward has enjoyed success in pageant competitions over the past few years. In addition to her strong showing in last year's Miss Massachusetts Collegiate America, she is a three-time semifinalist in the Miss Teen Massachusetts Pageant and in 2016, she was First Runner-up in the Teen Division at the Miss USA of America Pageant in Connecticut. She won Miss Congeniality, was First Runner-up in the talent competition (dancing) and was high point scorer among all the divisions in the competition for Outfit of Choice.
Still, she had always had to hear someone else's name called as the winner at the end of the night. But all that changed last month.
As Miss Massachusetts Collegiate America, Ward finds herself with a very busy schedule and she couldn't be happier.
"There are photo shoots and public appearances," she said. "There are also talks I'll be giving at schools about the pageant's national platform which is called B.R.A.V.E. It's an anti-bullying program."
Already, Ward has participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event in Boston and has spoken to a 2nd Grade Class at the Dudley Elementary School about B.R.A.V.E. Ward said she was overwhelmed by the response she received from the youngsters.
Ward's year as Miss Massachusetts Collegiate America will be highlighted by a trip to Little Rock, AR in June to represent the state in the Miss Collegiate America Pageants and a chance to win a prize package that includes a $10,000 college scholarship.
Of course, it's not as if Ward's schedule is light to begin with. In addition to her college course load, she is a member of the Nichols College field hockey team and is a professional model with The Beauty Within Model Agency.
