The Tewksbury Jr. Redmen Squirt AAA Hockey Team won the District 10 Tier II Championship on Sunday January 27th with a dominating 6-0 win over Greater Lowell. The Jr. Redmen will now compete in the Massachusetts Tier II State Championships in early March at the Olympia Ice Center in Springfield, MA.
Determined to upset the Jr. Redmen, the Greater Lowell Hawks came out flying and were able to generate some early offense but goalie Owen Sovie made 2 highlight reel saves to keep the game scoreless. The Jr. Redmen got their legs moving and controlled play for the majority of the 1st period but were unable to put any pucks past the Greater Lowell goalie. With time winding down in the 1st period Justin Harrington put the locals up 1-0 as he made a pretty deke move around a Hawks’ defender and fired a wicked wrister bar-down with 35 seconds left in the period, assists on the goal going to Cam Hatch and Kevin Andriolo.
The Hawks started the 2nd period with some offensive zone pressure of their own but rock-solid defense from Ben Christopher, Dominic Parisi, and Jonathan Kusmaul kept any pucks away from the Jr. Redmen net. The Jr. Redmen used their team speed and puck moving ability to create a number of great scoring chances in the middle part of the 2nd period but once again the Hawks’ goalie was up to the challenge. With time winding down in the 2nd period the Jr. Redmen were able to increase their lead to 2-0 when Cam Lanziero’s wrister from the high slot sailed into the back of the net with 1 second remaining on the clock, assists on the goal going to Lyla Chapman and Arbel Levenson.
The 3rd period was completely dominated by the Jr. Redmen as they scored 4 goals in a 6-minute span to open up a 6-0 lead. Janik Nazarian got things started just 55 seconds into the 3rd period as he fired a backhander through the 5-hole for a 3-0 lead, assists on the goal going to Andrew Conroy and Dominic Parisi. Cam Lanziero scored his 2nd goal of the game just 1:12 later to increase the lead to 4-0, assists on the goal going to Lyla Chapman and Ben Christopher. Janik Nazarian quickly made it 5-0 with his 2nd goal of the game, assists going to Jonathan Kusmaul and Kevin Andriolo. Nazarian scored his 3rd goal of the game for the hat trick on a pretty tic-tac-toe passing play, assists to Justin Harrington and Cam Hatch. The Hawks had some late pressure but were unable to put the puck past super-goalie Owen Sovie. The final seconds ticked off the clock and the Jr. Redmen celebrated their District 10 Championship.
