Election 2019: Could Two Brand New School Committee Members Be Seated Without A Challenge?

Feb 04, 2019 01:50PM ● By Bill Gilman

To say that the nomination period for the 2019 Tewksbury Municipal Election has slowed to a crawl might be an understatement.

There is a chance, with just over two weeks to go in the nomination period, that ballot may be just about set for the April 6 election.

This is especially surprising, given that incumbent School Committee members Krissy Polimeno and Arthy Bennett will not be seeking re-election. To date, only Erin Knyff and John Stadtman have pulled papers for the seats. If no one else steps forward, Knyff and Stadtman will walk onto the committee without a challenge.

The unfortunate consequence, should that happen, is an election cycle with no robust discussion or debate about education/school department topics.

Another race that is uncontested, at present, is for a 5-year seat on the Planning Board. As a rule, no topics generate more debate at Annual Town Meeting than developments and zoning articles. And yet, as of Feb. 1, incumbent Vin Fratalia has no challenger.
