State Rep. Tram Nguyen Among Several Officials To Be Honored By The Asian American Women’s Political Initiative

 CAMBRIDGE -- During Lunar New Year weekend, the Asian American Women’s Political Initiative (AAWPI), the country’s only political organization for Asian American women, is hosting an event to celebrate newly-elected AAPI trailblazers in Massachusetts, elected in 2017 and 2018 elections that saw a wave of women and women of color run and win across the country.  Over lunch, the event will feature a panel discussion with: 

●     State Representative Tram Nguyen (18th Essex), the first Vietnamese American woman elected to the Massachusetts Legislature

●     State Representative Maria Robinson (16th Middlesex), the first Korean American elected to the Massachusetts Legislature

●     Town Councillor Mehreen N. Butt (Wakefield), the first Muslim American woman elected to a town council in Massachusetts

●     Moderated by: Boston Teachers Union President Jessica Tang, the first LGBTQ and first person of color elected to be President of the 10,000-member BTU

Additionally, the following Asian American women city/town councilors, first elected in 2017, will also be recognized at the event: City Councillor Sumbul Siddiqui (Cambridge), City Councillor Afroz Khan (Newburyport), Alderman At-Large Manisha Bewtra (Melrose), and City Councillor Helen Moon (Pittsfield).
