Julie Masotta and Cassidy Gruning each had a hat trick, and the third-seeded Tewksbury/Methuen girls hockey team trounced Westford Academy, 6-2, in the First Round of the Division 1 State Tournament.
The Red Rangers (19-1-1) advance to take on No. 11 Peabody/Lynnfield/North Reading (16-4-2) in the quarterfinals, Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at O'Brien Arena in Woburn.
Tewksbury/Methuen is now just two wins away from a return trip to the State Final.
Against Westford, the Red Rangers were a little sluggish out of the gate and spotted the Grey Ghosts a 1-0 lead. But Gruning got TM on track with two of her three goals, giving the Red Rangers the lead for good.
From there it was Masotta (two assists) scoring two goals in the second period and one more in third to help blow the game open.
Kaia Hollingsworth had another strong game in net for the Red Rangers with 18 saves, including several gems when the game was still in doubt.
