There were 10 teams in the Division 2 North Girls Basketball Sectional but it has come down to the teams that earned the top two seeds.
No. 2 Tewksbury High will meet top-seeded Pentucket Regional, in the title game, Saturday at Tsongas Arena in Lowell. Tap-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The teams reached the championship game in very different ways. Pentucket (21-3) lay waste to No. 4 Swampscott, 52-28. Tewksbury meanwhile, needed late-game heroics to hold off No. 3 Malden, 52-49, in a thriller at the TMHS gym.
The back-and-forth nailbiter featured 21 lead changes. The last one came midway through the fourth quarter, when Haley Mignon scored on a tough inside layup and Lizzie Gallella drained a jumper to put the Redmen on top for good, 47-45. Gallella finished with a game-high 21 points for Mark Bradley's team, including 15 in the first half, when the Malden couldn't find a way to stop her.
A three-pointer by Ally Wild extended the Tewksbury lead, but Malden clawed back and had a chance to tie the game and force overtime. But with 5.8 seconds to play, Mignon stole an inbounds pass to seal the victory and send the Redmen into the title game.
Mignon finished with nine points and three steals. Erin Gallella also added nine.
