A Tewksbury Police officer is continuing to recover from injuries sustained in a head-on crash in North Tewksbury earlier this week.

According to Middlesex DA Marian Ryan, the crash took place at 6:46 TEWKSBURY - On May 7, 2019 at approximately 6:46 a.m., on Route 133 near Cooney Road.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was believed to be traveling eastbound in  a marked cruiser, when a white van allegedly crossed into the officer’s lane, striking the police cruiser head-on.

Both the officer and the driver of the van sustained serious, but not life-threatening, injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

According to Ryan, the driver of the van, Jorge Joel Gomez Guzman, 21, of Lawrence, has been charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation and having an improperly registered vehicle.  The driver remains hospitalized and in police custody at this time. An arraignment has not been scheduled.

The crash is being investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts State Police Collision and Analysis Reconstruction Section and Tewksbury Police. According to Ryan, additional charges may be filed.
