Tewksbury Woman Hosting a Show on Lasell University Radio Staion
Maddy Gallant, a Communication major from Tewksbury (01876) is one of Lasell University's DJs on its Newton-based radio station, WLAS (102.9FM).
Gallant hosts "Maddy & Megan in the Morning" two days a week.
The University radio station took home 11 trophies at the Intercollegiate Broadcast System Awards, including national winner for "Best Public Service Promotion." WLAS has received the Gold Microphone Award for Outstanding Broadcasting Excellence for four years in a row, and was recognized as the Lasell Student Organization of the year in 2019.
As an FM radio station, WLAS distinguishes itself from larger institutions in the area as one of only 441 FCC licensed college radio stations in the United States and Canada. According to Professor Brian Wardyga, general manager of the station, DJ airtime has increased by more than 25 percent since WLAS became an FM station.
"The radio station's FM frequency provides students with vital, real-world experience in their field," he says. "Being a live, FM station gives students the liability and responsibility of complying with FCC rules and regulations, making it the ultimate Connected Learning experience."
WLAS's mission is to bring real-world radio experience to Lasell students. It dubs itself "Newton's New Alternative," with the goal of promoting new acts and developing artists who are not presently on commercial radio. The station also supports charities through PSAs and on-campus events, including sports broadcasting with the athletic department. Listeners can tune in at 102.9FM or through TuneIn Radio or iHeart Radio apps.
